Default get rid of Ubuntu and replace with Win xp - 05-18-2010, 02:37 AM

Try as I might I just cannot grasp Ubuntu. I am very familiar with Win xp. I want to remove Ubuntu and replace it with Win xp. I have an external drive and a copy of Win xp. How do I go about this task? Will the windows xp fit on my mini 9 4gb ssd?

Install Windows normally. So, put the Windows disc in the drive, reboot and select the USB optical drive as the boot device (hit 0 at the Dell splash screen for the boot device menu). And just format the entire drive during the Windows install. That'll get rid of Ubuntu completely.

4GB is pretty tight for Windows, even XP. You might want to look into nLite, a tool for creating lightweight Windows XP installs.

Hi Johjohjus,
I agree - save some grief and get a bigger SSD. I have an original STEC 8GB one (works fine, but I have since moved up to 16GB and now to 64GB) that I am now getting rid of and happy to pass on at a very knock down price! PM me if you want it cheap. Don't know where you are though, I am UK based.

I had an EeePC with a 4GB SSD. You can definitely get a nice little XP running machine by doing five things: (1) nLight your XP disk. (2) Compress your Program Files folder. (3) delete the rollback files for any Windows Service Packs you install afterward. (4) Turn off your page file. (5) turn off system restore.

That said, you can probably pick up a used 8GB ssd for a song, and you'd be much happier that way, as it would give you a lot more breathing room.

daf3g knows exactly what he's talking about. I just installed XP again and did many of those steps, to great effect.

I also suggest disabling search indexing of your drive.

FWIW, I picked up a GFDL Super Talent 32GB SSD on eBay for $85. Lots of play room now.

Before you install Windows, I run the desktop version of Ubuntu not the remix, which may make a difference. If there is a specific problem you're having, Yahoo has a linux newbies forum which is fairly active and may help you get up speed.

go get a 16gb SSD and then run XP pro with a 16gb+ SDHC, class 4 or 6 for the "other" stuff.

You'll be much happier.

I got my dad a Vostro A90 and my mom an alpine white Dell Mini 9, and both run Windows XP SP3 fine on 8 GB SSD's. But 8 GB really seems to be the minimum size to run XP comfortably. My mom's came with XP pre-installed, and I gotta say it is a bit sluggish. Dell puts a lot of bloat-ware on it. My dad's, on which I installed the OS myself, is much snappier.

As an Ubuntu user myself, there have been many times I had questions about the OS. By far the best site to get help from has been this website. They even have a specific section for Dell Ubuntu users.
