Default Which SSD for upgrade? - 05-16-2010, 01:20 PM

I want to upgrade to multiboot my m9, but what ssds are good? So far i only know that it MUST be HALF mini pcie (or t-style).

I hear that runcores are fast but expensive, super talents are similar (?), and kingspecs rather bad. Is that true? Are there any other brands?

Also, are there early models that come cheap on ebay but suffer from ssd childhood diseases? Anything else i should be aware of?

Which brands/types offer good value for money with 32 or 64 GB?

Also, can the usb on the runcores be used in two ways, ie for loading the ssd and after install as a controller for a usb device?

Thanks in advance,

g

Use the search button as there are plenty of threads on this subject.
I chose the Runcore route as the warranty and specs were worth the extra £££s for me.

And yes to your second question.

The USB port on the Mini9 version of the Runcore cannot be used as a host for other devices due to a limitation of the Mini 9.

I recommend either a Runcore or as SuperTalent GFDL model.

I have just got SuperTalent GFDL after trying a few others, and I have been pretty happy with the speed. RunCore seems to be very popular here, but I think they are totally overpriced.

Super talent GFDL is it, then. Thanks for the input, everybody! Good to read from people who have actual comparisons among the competitors, not just with the Dell ssd.

To whom it may interest: computeruniverse.net (Germany) offers the Super Talent FEM32GFDL (32GB) for €87,90 + shipping (as of today).

Another plug for the GFDL. Make sure that you know you're getting that model, as the GHDL is the same size, but considerably slower.

The Runcore SSDs are expensive, but honestly they seem to be the only ones that are really worth a hoot. I had been frustrated with my 16GB STEC as long as I've owned the Mini 9, at times it would cause the system to pause for a second or two while it was being written to (having used JMicron based SSDs before on a desktop, I was aware of the low random write speed with some flash controllers and knew the SSD was to blame). Recently I finally broke down and got one of the Runcore Pro IV Light SSDs. No more pauses or slowdowns, I seem to be CPU limited now instead of disk limited. The Pro IV Light uses an Indilinx controller, the same as is used on some of OCZ's high performance desktop SSDs like the Vertex and Vertex Turbo. It has a good write caching system and doesn't have issues with random writes like a lot of Mini 9 SSDs do.

I think you'd be much happier if you spent a bit more and got something like the Pro IV Light. The 32GB model isn't terribly expensive, about $130 at MDD I think.

I should have waited some more days before ordering... Thanks for the info, if I ever have to step up the performance I think I'll follow your advice.

I like to share too. I installed the 64GB RunCore Pro 50mm SSD on my mini 9 and pile on the "rubbish" software I had on my Dell 700m lol ... that plus XP Pro sp3, Office 2010 beta and it is still lightning fast so RunCore is definitely something I'll recommend.
