Default Dell Mini 9 project... - 05-01-2010, 05:50 PM

I'm going to buy a broadcom card for my mini 9.
I'll put it in place of the pci wireless card slot.
I'll either buy a wireless USB dongle for the external USB port, or...
I was wondering if the WWAN slot could be used to connect a USB wireless dongle. Will this work? Or is doesn't WWAN slot only have USB power...

Thanks

The WWAN slot is wired for USB, but 3.3V I think. People have installed USB hubs inside the 9 and used them for WLAN adapters, GPS receivers and the like. I'll comment that your WLAN reception with a dongle inside the 9, under the metal keyboard tray, is not likely to be very good.

Seems like a tight squeez to put a USB hub and hookup stuff to it in that little space.
I use my m9 in the same room as my router. So the signal strength might be okay.
If it doesn't work I can always plug the USB dongle in one of the 3 USB ports.
I want to do something with that WWAN slot...

I tried connecting a device directly to the WWAN but you really would need to install a hub first so windows will recognise it (I'm usin Win7)... Its best to get a hub with wired sockets out as they reduce the hub's pcb size, and in a mini 9 mod space is fairly limited. ..

Just solder the wired to the wwan pads and hot glue or tape them down so they dont break off. and you can get the Vcc from the trackpad 4wire connector on the motherboard topside and you can use the ground rings from the WWAN slot... then presto! you're good to go and you'll still your 3usb ports +X (x being the number of slots on the hub...

Here's the article I read it on created by Chewy [Integrating a USB Hub into the Mini 9]
