Default Dual or RAID 1 setup idea??? - 01-02-2009, 07:07 AM

I was wondering if this came across anyone's mind?
create ribbon cable for two ssd's or creating a raid 1 setup in a M9... by using either your old sdd and a new sdd - or two new ssd's... (4/8/16/32GB)

Black M9, Ubuntu 804, 1GB RAM, 4GB SSD, BT, USKEYs
[InTnal] 5 USB ports w/ 32 GB FD on each port
[ExTnal] 3x32GB SD (documents), 2x1TB USB HDD (mus&vid)
-Future Mod's: 2GB RAM, 64GB SSD, TS, GPS, HDD LED, Kboard Light, USB TV, Finger Swipe

I'm not completely sure but mostly sure the mini does not support any sort of RAID array. Mostly I think you would have a dual SSD set-up and it would use one as a boot and the other as storage. For the money and time spent I would suggest getting a external drive with a 2.5" and use that with a USB cable. If you can figure this out to make it a RAID volume, Please post it in the forum. Your biggest drawback is going to be the PATA data limit on the motherboard connector.

It would seem that if it possible to daisy chain two regular PATA HDD's as master and slave that it should be possible here with our SSD's

don't know how to go about doing, but it should be possible

I was talking to a few other people and although its completely possible to set up a RAID array using only software loaded onto the two SSD's. However, there is another factor to consider. The limited space available inside the mini. You could possibly sacrifice one of the wireless card spots for the 2nd drive but wiring them up so both are connected to the same slot is going to be tricky. Something I would much rather leave to the pros until the procedure has been perfected to the point that just about any person with decent soldering skills could perform this. OCZ has some nice looking 2.5" form factor SSD's with capacities up to 200-250 gigs and excellent read/write speeds, almost as good or slightly better than the Runcore. I think if you really want to do this for speed or gaming, you should get a device that will allow such. I'm not saying its impossible but really, really difficult. Same as installing a 2nd stick of ram and actually getting dual data rate instead of 1-2gig stick, its possible but will take time and patience (sometimes alot of money too) to figure it out. I think we need a super uber geek :ugeek: to figure this out.

does dell or anyone else post the pin out online for the moboard? point it out for me..

if so, then I could either create a "ribbon cable" (cables to go), or hard wire adapter (china) for it to connect to the moboard..

yesterday i setup a raid 1 using my mini 9.

i used two 4gb usb memory sticks and a 4 port usb hub. one stick was the primary and the second stick was the mirror.

the way it works is you create a virtual single disk using the two usb sticks and then boot to that. completely ignoring the internal 30gb ssd.

i suppose one could mount the internal ssd after booting to the usb raid but i found no reason for doing that. other disks are mountable as usual so the ssd should be too.

today i have dismantled the raid i created yesterday and i am recreating it using 3x 4gb usb stick on the same hub with the third drive as the spare. if one of the drives fails the raid will automatically switch to the spare drive. i am formating the 3rd usb stick now. i may not set about forming the raid partition until tomorrow.

any-who, after i successfully complete the 3 stick raid and i am satisfied i know what i am doing i will set about to creating the final incarnation of my mini 9 raid 1 using the internal 30gb ssd and a 32gb sd card.

the internal ssd will be the primary disk and the sd card will be the mirror.

i realize that architecture is a subjective sport but imo this ssd/sd raid architecture will be ~the~ most elegant implementation of the raid paradigm on the mini.

i don't believe i have the skill with altering hardware the way you guys do. coming from the computer science department i was taught to assume the hardware is sufficient as-is. and this ~is~ the hardware mod forum

if i ever find 30gb insufficient for my activities on the mini 9 i may implement a raid 0 using the ssd and sd as a single virtual disk without any mirroring.

~alonzo, mini 9, run by ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix, 1gb ram, 30gb ssd, 1.5gb swap space, web cam, Bluetooth ,,, it runs ~real~ good!
