Default Best runcore Drive - 03-31-2010, 01:31 AM

Hi, im a little confused, i currently have the stock 8gb SSD and its a little slow and theres not alot of space. I would like to get a 32gb drive, and ive been looking at the T-style drive for £112 with read/write of 80/60. There is also 2 pro iv light, one with read/write 90/55 and one with 125/80

32GB RunCore Pro IV Light 50mm PCI-e SSD for Dell Mini 9 / Vostro A90
32GB Runcore Pro IV Light 50mm mini-SATA PCI-e Solid State Drive SSD
32GB RunCore Pro IV 50mm T-Style PCI-e PATA Solid State Drive for Dell Mini 9

Which is the best drive to get? I run Archlinux at the moment, total install is about 2gb, also have 2gb ram. I watch 720p mHD videos very smoothly with coreAVC, althought some of the larger (longer) files struggle, so i assume with a faster drive this should be eliminated. What do you recommend, id like to spend about £100, less preferably.

Which is the best price/performance ratio?

The fastest drive is the T style - this however can only be used if you have no WWAN adapter fitted.

The mini SATA card can't be used as our drives are PATA - this leaves the first one which is suitable for the mini 9 if you have a WWAN card or adapter attached to the motherboard.

The playback of 720p files is not just a function of the HDD but also of the processor which tends to bottleneck as it still needs to decode the video - so while I would expect to see faster access times, boot times as a general increase in perceived speed I can't say you will be able to play 720p files simply by changing the SSD

checking the bitrate on a 720p video thats 30minutes and one thats 1 hour and 30 there is no difference, and while the 30minutes video plays fine, anything over an hour stutters, i assume its because the file is loaded into ram in the smaller file. The processor should be more than enough. Thanks, ill get the T-Style as i dont have a WWAN card, thanks

Suggest you check the temps of the mini 9 then - as these are passively cooled they can get real hot running CPU intensive programs - think it's more likely the CPU is downclocking due to heat. Try running a fan in the back of the mini see how this works before splashing out on the SSD. Unless u want the extra space that is.

32GB RunCore Pro IV Light 50mm PCI-e SSD is the same chipset / speed as the T-Style.

Call mydigitaldiscount.com to confirm this. It's what I use and it runs cool and the machine is snappy fast with 2GB of hyperx running windows 7.
