Default NVIDIA Ion 2, Optimus - 02-17-2010, 08:54 PM

Assuming rumors I have read are true Nvidia's new card will bring workable HD to Netbooks including the Mini 9, if u have an open pci-e.

So who would actually want to get one of these things, and how much would you pay?

Also, I was wondering if it would work on multiple OS's or just Windows 7, (I read Optimus feature only works on 7 but things could change). Personaly I run Ubuntu most of the time and rarely touch 7.

And in-case anyone is kind enough to answer will this only work if you had WWAN enabled... I cant tell if I do. This would probably be sweet for hooking up to a projector or external monitor.

You misunderstand what this is - it isn't a card. Rather, it's chips that go on the motherboard.

http://minifrag.com/does-your-netboo...-nvidia-ion-2/

So the ion 2 is unrelated to Optimus? I'm so confused now, sorry. I thought the 'ion 2' is a graphics card that is coming out with newer netbooks and as an expansion for older atom netbooks in a pci-e slot.

And I dont even have a slot for a card in the WWAN spot, just the solder points.
lol knew it was too good to be true, k well no hd for me on my Dell mini 9 then...

Nope. Ion 2 is a graphics chip that gets soldered to the motherboard. It can be combined with Optimus technology to allow switching between the Ion 2 chip and the CPU's integrated graphics. Whoever wrote that item at minifrag.com is very confused.

There IS a MiniPCIe card that can help with graphics, the Broadcom Crystal. Some people have added this to their Mini 9 in the WLAN (not WWAN, which is USB only) slot. The Dell 1012 will offer it as an option soon. However, it is limited to HD video decode and doesn't help games and the like.

Thanks for the clarification. So will the old Intel chip need to be removed for the nVidia chip to be installed on a mini 9?

Cool, I'll look into the Broadcom card too.

If you can put the nVidia ion 2 onto the processor will the Broadcom card even be helpful? Just wanted to review my options, thanks again for your help.

The use of the Nvidia Ion/Optimus technology requires that the PC maker design it in. It is not something you can swap in on your own.

The only thing you can do for the Mini 9 is the Broadcom card. I'd venture to say that if you had a PC with Ion 2, you would not need the Broadcom card.

Alright sounds good, guess HD for me only if I'm willing to give up my Wireless N card for a usb one. I dont think so...

But only $20ish sounds very enticing, maybe I'll get this and test it out a bit

This is the correct card right? Sorry for all the questions...
