Default anyone interested in upgrading their webcam? - 02-02-2010, 09:37 AM

This may just be a dumb idea, I haven't got a clue. I was wondering, though, if it would be possible to replace the internal webcam module with an upgrades 2.0 Megapixel module from...I don't know...let's say...a Dell inspiron 1525? or vostro 1320, perhaps? I'm thinking the bezel would obviously have to be tweaked and the webcams led possibly disabled.

But really...how feasible is something like this? I know most people don't care about webcams...but I, for one, DO!

It would take a surprising amount of work to do that.

We're not the only ones who wish that components were a bit more modular that way.

I have been thinking about this. There is enough space if you whittle a little and move the wifi antennas sideways. Main problem appears to be the driver, and that in turn depends on the OS.

driverwise, the macbook pro webcam would be good since it works in both osx and windows, but ive heard the webcam and lcd are integrated into one cable. maybe the imac would be a better option :/

The webcam has its own cable - it is really just a USB device. If you can get something to fit, it would probably work, but I can't see it worth the trouble.

The webcam of the 1026 (Dell part NN784) works fine. I have tested it with XP, am just waiting for the hardware mod itch attack to get it in.

2.0 MP, and if you really get going, a stereo mic -- haven't figured out how to connect that, though.
Downside: No driver for OSX afaik.

From side to middle the contacts are gnd/black, D, D, Vcc/red, and four more for the mics.

The 1025 cam is apparently indentical except for the ribbon connector. You'd need a microscope and solder with a hot acupuncture needle.

The new Latitude 2100/2110 has a 2.0 MP webcam also, it might be more suitable for a "direct" replacement.
Although, would .7 really make much difference?

maybe not the raw pixel count but the sensor and lens quality? I'd imagine the low end of the production going to the cheaper cameras, them going into the low cost products. Or maybe I just got a very bad m9 cam.
