Default Difference Between Runcore EeePC Mini9 SSD - 12-22-2008, 09:39 AM

Hi there;

I have noticed on mydigitaldiscount that there is a distinction between EeePC and Mini9 PCIe SSDs and that the EeePC disks are better spec'ed.

I have emailed them asking if they can be interchanged but my questions have gone unanswered (poor customer service which is making my think twice about spending my money with them).

Does any anyone why there is a distinction between the two brands of netbooks when it comes to the Runcore PCIe SSDs. Can I use an EeePC runcore PCIe SDD

No, they use different connectors.

Really!

Actually I think the connector is the same, the difference is on which side of the PCB the memory sits on. Otherwise there is no difference.

Can someone confirm this?

The eee PC versions use SATA I believe and the Mini versions use PATA through the mini pci-e connection. Also the eee PC versions are physically longer and will not fit.

That doesn't sound right. Both Runcore SSDs are PATA.

EEE pc drives are larger, thus the reason it was harder for us to find replacements initally and thus the reason we only have one place to buy the damn things.

The pin-outs are similar if not the same, but the form factor is not the same. We can't fit the EEE's drives in the spot available. Also, the EEE drives have the slave USB port, which our motherboards can't handle.

eeepc
Length: 25.70 ± 0.10 mm
Width: 70 ± 0.10 mm (2.006 ± 0.004 in)
Height: 3.50 (0.138) max

vs.

mini 9
Length: 25.70 ± 0.10 mm
Width: 50 ± 0.10 mm (2.006 ± 0.004 in)
Height: 3.50 (0.138) max

5cm vs. 7cm, but there's an error in the inches units. it suppose to be 2.75in, not 2

The reason many people have thought that the EEE uses a Sata SSD is because someone makes a card that goes into the EEE's SSD slot and has some kind of SATA connector on it. I guess it's always possible it's got a SATA to PATA converter chip on it like the RunCore drives do. The RunCore drive on the Mini9 is internally SATA, with a JMicro SATA to PATA converter chip on the card.
