I have to disagreee on the slot loading drive mangling discs as well. I used slot loading DVD drive in my desktop PC for 8 years and it never swallowed a single one that didn't then emerge perfectly again.

Hacked MacBook Air SuperDrive. Real HD LED.

I didn't say they always mangle discs, but I have seen it happen. I used a slot-loader in my PC for several years. It seemed like a nice idea at the time, but I found I preferred trays. (Heck, I used to use caddies further back in time.)

you can find these superdrives all over ebay from 65 bux or less. Most of them are open box because people buy them without realizing you can only use them on macbook air and have to return them. The mod is not difficult at all, and it's a 9 dollar part (shipping extra). I'm curious to know if you have been able to burn DVDs with it. There were some people that have had issues with lack of power to the drive.

i agree, I saw an external dvd drive for 19.99 the other day. I find no use for a disc drive on the mini... accept when I installed leopard..

Is anyone here willing to mod my superdrive? I have a 2009 Macbook and would like to be able to play region 2 DVDs using this superdrive (seeing as how I got it while living in Japan). I am trying to get around the rule that only allows me to switch the region code up to five times.

I think you misunderstand the type of "mod" being discussed here.
