Default Uses for WWAN slot: Dual SSDs? Broadcom HD? - 12-22-2009, 09:08 PM

Hey all!

After my last post I rethought about what I would do to mod my Mini 9. After looking at some tear downs (and reading posts on here), I noticed that the WWAN slot was open. I also tried to find on here if anybody has tried a dual SSD approach, but I never actually found a definite answer (maybe I didn't look deep enough).

Also, I never found a mention of the Broadcom HD video accelerator.

If anybody has tried either of these or has any insight on them, please let me know.

Thanks!

"Mini PCIe" SSDs are not wired normally and won't work in any other slot. And most Mini 9 netbooks don't have the WWAN slot installed. So, you have two difficult problems to deal with.

As for the Broadcom HD video accelerator, I'm not sure. But I think it might require a true Mini PCIe slot, while the WWAN in the Mini 9 might just be wired for a USB connection.

The WWAN slot in the Mini 9 is wired for USB only. Only the WLAN slot is a true MiniPCIe.

That makes sense. So I could remove the WLAN card and use that as either a second hard drive or possibly with the broadcom? I know that would be sacrificing wifi, but my network is an N network anyways and I do not believe the Mini 9 has a Wifi N capable card, am I correct?

No. The WiFi card and slot are normal Mini PCIe. A "Mini PCIe" SSD (which isn't truly Mini PCIe, thanks to the strange wiring) won't work in that slot.

You could put the Broadcom card in the WLAN slot - people have done that. You could use a USB WiFi dongle as an alternative. Wireless N cards are available that fit the 9 (I have one), but Dell didn't sell it that way.

The SSD, as reflex says, is MiniPCIe in form-factor only - at least for the 9. The pinout is completely non-standard.

Awesome, thanks! Would the Broadcom work with Snow Leopard? I am planning on installing 10.6 on it, but if the card is not supported by Snow Leopard then I wouldn't be interested. Are the drivers out there for it?

It is not supported by OS X at this time. I read in another thread that someone is working on OS X drivers for it.
