Smile Broadcom wireless card and Ubuntu 9.10 - 12-12-2009, 05:33 PM

I could NOT get a recently purchased older Mini-9 wireless to find the card, much less the network on either Win XP Pro or Ubuntu 9.01. The new 9 had .5Gb ram and 4Gb ssd, and I changed both but had no joy. The new 2 and 16 gigs, respectively brought the 9's general performance up nicely, but still no wireless card. I swapped the Broadcom BCM94312MCG cards from the new purchase to another 9 I have on which the wireless has worked flawlessly and the problem did not migrate.

The solution?? start with that nice virgin ssd and load Ubuntu 8.4! Happy, happy, joy, joy!!!!!.....

You probably were just missing the WiFi drivers on both OSs.

Information about installing the drivers in Ubuntu 9.10 (you might need a wired Internet connection, I'm not sure)

Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

Thank you. The link goes to this header and paragraph:

"Package list must be manually refreshed before installing drivers

The "Hardware Drivers" tool (Jockey) requires up to date package lists before it detects and advertises necessary driver packages. Immediately after a new installation, these package lists will not be present. Before running Jockey for the first time, update the package lists using System->Administration->Software->Update Manager (on Ubuntu) or "KPackageKit" (on Kubuntu)."

So, how does one update the package lists before running the jockey for the first time? What is running on the machine that I am loading jockey onto. I understand the need for a cable connection to update the lists on a machine that the wireless is not working on, but this seems to mean that an OS is running on the machine being updated to jockey.

"Jockey" is just the name of the utility for enabling proprietary drivers (mostly WiFi and graphics) included in Ubuntu. You don't need to install it separately.

It sounds like you might be confusing it with "Jaunty Jackalope", the codename for Ubuntu 9.04 .

Question 12-13-2009, 07:42 PM

Indeed I was (am) making exactly that mistake. I can't help but wonder what purpose the codenames serve. But, of course, if I am the only person ever confused by having two "handles" for the same entity please forget that I asked

Thanks for the reply, that dealt with most of my confusion. Now, I just need to know how to find a method to add the missing wifi drivers to the package list, so that I can have both wifi and 9.10.

Thanks for the guidance and patience.

Linux developers like cutsey names for things. Seems to be part of the mystique.

In the case of Ubuntu, the initial letter indicates, more or less, the release sequence number. For Jaunty Jackelope, that would be J for 10. I think 8.04 was "Hardy Heron" or 8.

Question 12-13-2009, 08:48 PM

Well, stumbling "Onward thru the fog!" as we like to say here in Austin, Texas, I now have the HP Mini 1030NR running from a live thumb drive. (INCREDIBLY easy procedure from here:Install Ubuntu 9.10 to a Flash Drive from Windows | USB Pen Drive Linux)

Still no wireless connection, though. Wondering if I can move those drivers from my 8.04 (Dell supplied) over to the HP with a file transfer. Maybe if I knew the filenames and directories....

It's coming right along, and the display is flamin' BEAUTIFUL!!!

Further guidance is much appreciated, thanks!

You won't be able to simply copy files to get working drivers on another machine. The driver needs to be matched to the kernel version (the kernel is the core of the OS).

As for getting Broadcom WiFi working in 9.10, these instructions may work.

Mini 9 | Intel 5100 Wifi | Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook
Mini 1012 | SSD | Intel 6200 Wifi | Ubuntu 11.10 64bit

Thanks again for the reply. I just clicked the link, and without even starting to read the text I got some gratitude. Apparently I'm not the only one having this problem. I'm not sure what the wireless card in the HP mini is, but the Broadcom seems pretty common. At least Dell seems to have used a bunch of them.

As for the HP Mini, I got the four rubber plugs and screws out of the bottom corners, only to find that it took more effort to open the case than I was comfortable applying. THEN I found that the four rubber plugs are keyed and all four are different. They're in, and I still don't know what wireless card HP used.

Time to read that link material. Thanks again, reflex...

Well, I read the linked info at: HP Mininote Broadcom Wireless Finally Working on Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala | Hot News and found that either it or I didn't work. But as a result of multiple attempts, I now have a CDROM burned from the 9.10 Desktop-i386-iso. I also have A thumbdrive with the same data and another thumbdrive with the Netbook Remix iso.

Somewhere in there, the drivers for the broadcom card must be located, but how to get them into the HP's SSD and OS baffles me! I've followed those instructions as faithfully as possible, simply clicking past the error messages and etc. which are not mentioned in the instructions.

Gee, I wish I could determine if the error is mine or the software or the instructions.

Any help or guidance is very much appreciated.
