There's no support for HDMI in the GMA950 graphics hardware.

I find Vga is just as good for me. My 1080p 40" display handles it well, overheats when playing flash video in 1080p res. but other than that normal use is great

What about using one of these-
OWC USB to DVI/HDMI/VGA Video Display (Up to... (VIDU2DVIA) at OWC

I was considering trying one, last time I looked they were $99.

Maybe you should be asking how instead of why? There are plenty of newer displays that don't support VGA input.

Read the fine print on that USB adapter:

"This release does not support OpenGL acceleration (3D hardware acceleration) so therefore applications and features that require OpenGL, Quartz Extreme, Quartz Composer and other framework based on OpenGL will not be fully supported. Examples of such features are Keynote Presentations, iPhoto Slideshows and iMovie"

I would be wary of expecting any kind of video playback through that output either. However, they are now $30 cheaper than when Underwhelmed had last checked them. Good luck!

I made a point of getting a mini 9 before the mini 10 came out partially because of the VGA port. My monitor has an unused VGA port (as well as an old VGA cable hanging around) which means I can have a cable connected all the time and simply and easily extend my mini 9 onto my dekstop screen.

I guess you could have the same thing but for HDMI.

HDMI would be good for connecting to a TV, but I find a lot of TV's nowadays have VGA inputs too

Please do not send me support requests via PM.

Yep yep, thankfully the next Mini I buy will have HDMI. My VGA out I use with my projector and some monitors, my TVs don't support VGA though.

people use the mini 9 for video?

i've never had much sustained luck using it for video.

hdmi is dvi + other junk (hdcp blah blah blah). you could theoretically pipe dvi out of the gma950 into the hdmi connector. but good luck with that.
