Default HDD? - 10-07-2008, 04:56 PM

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but I'd love to put an 80 or 100 gb HDD in the mini. Is there any chance it's compatible and would fit?

I've searched the net hi and low, and haven't found a word on this, which suggests it can't be done.

I'm going to put OS X on mine, so I definitely want more space, but don't want to go for a 32 GB MLC SDD as they're too damn slow. For the same price, I could easily get an 80 GB HDD, but that's obviously worthless if it won't fit.

I have a 1/8 inch HD and it's way too big to fit.

Maybe with a case mod.

Yep, but an older 20gb model drive. Same one used in the 20gb iPods.
I scavenged mine from a demo GPS unit and found a USB enclosure for it a year or two ago.
...and then 16gb SDHC cards hit and I realized that I didn't really need to go through all that trouble.

They are slow drives anyway. Fine for media but VERY slow transfer speeds.

You'd be better off spending your money on a large SDHC card IMHO.

there's no room for 1.8" or 2.5" HDDs. it wouldn't be too bad to install a CF card near the WWAN slot though.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Until there's an SLC option at a reasonable price, I'll sit tight with 16 GB, I guess. It just limits the usefulness of this thing as an OS X machine.
