Great to read all the success stories. Do you think a newbie in hardware mods would be able to install the capacitive screen on their Mini 9? Did anyone write a guide (step-by-step) approach to this? Thanks.

Well I wired this thing up the other day, following the diagram I put up from the instructions Atan3 put up and it worked. I was able to get consistent responces from Windows 7, ubuntu, Jolicloud. Now I just gotta calibrate it. But then I ran into a problem, When I lay the capacitive screen anywhere near the lcd screen it starts to move a bit because of the metal from the screen(or maybe current...) Once its on the lcd it barely responds to my touches (but this could be fixed with a calibration, just havent tried yet).

I would call this mod more of an advanced mod because the touchscreen doesnt fit under the bezel (so you gotta modify alot). Also advanced cause you need to solder some wires to the touch controler board (unless you can find the right wire somewhere).

TIP - Make sure to ground do the grounding cable as well or the touch screen may not respond. I actually just soldered a grounding cable to one of the screw holes on the touch controller board (theyre all connected).

Thanks for the prompt reply! Will keep those in mind.

hey guys, I saw that I have a few days free during the holidays and figure it would a neat project to mod my dell min 9.

I know there are a lot of folks that have done it already, but I wanted to ask if anyone knew where I can get a capacitivie touchscreen kit? The link from onlinecomputers shows that it's out of stock and from talking to them they said it's discontinued and no lower will sell it anymore.

Do you guys know where else I might be able to find a kit? I found a seller on ebay but he said it only supports win7 and I was hoping to install ubuntu on this.

Thanks in adv!

I have one that i never ended up using. I soldered the 4 points, i noticed without the ground the touch screen wouldn't respond. I just would ground that pin and it worked but was very weird in how it responded. it was both uncalibrated and putting it very close to the lcd would cause the screen to be less responsive. Probably due to it being a capacitive touch screen.

Anyway I'll sell the screen/controller to you / a half done project. I bought it for $50 + 25 tax/shipping. How about $25 + shipping?

Ohh and I didn't try it on windows 7, which I know it works, but on ubuntu it worked out of the box, no restart required.

@josh4trunks if you still have it. I'll take it off your hands. Has anyone else been trying to find these capacitive touch screens as well? All the places listed before are done. On ebay, someone is selling 8.9" touch screen panels for 90-100 + shipping from asia. The only other ones I can find are the resistive panels on places like dealextreme.

Have they just stopped selling/making them? I have spent hours trying to search but was hoping someone else had this problem too and could point me in the right direction?

Cool, I was actually debating throwing it on ebay. Mind sending me 20 bucks for shipping / my time? I'll package it up and see how much it costs to send.

work got me pretty busy..

the workaround i found using the 3m capacitive screen was to use the 5th pin on the controller and grounding it to the lcd frame- also i used the 3m mounting tape and capped the responsiveness issues i ran into ... go figure... i had tried using electrical tape but i guess the air pocket trapped between the screen and display caused some stray capacitances... i also added a 6mm, 5vdc fan to cool the cpu, sometimes it really heats up on Win7... had it as my media unit for my workshop running centrafuse 1.0 cracked..

recently decided to scrap my whole mini shell and go for a slider design like the motorola milestone and came across a sweet projected capacitance touch screen, the kind where you dont have to have a direct touch applied to the screen but anywhere between 3 - 6mm for the screen to detect it... here's the link (VisualTouch.com)

... my idea was to mount the keyboard back to the base and mount the capacitive screen and lcd unto the slide.... and on the front face throw in a few switches for start, enter, up and down buttons by mapping the keycodes from an old USB keyboard and running e-switch tact switches - covering the entire face with a 2mm plexiglass clear panel...

i tried the motion control for the motion sensor in conjunction with XPadder to do the screen orientation control but somehow that never work for me as i wanted, especially on win7... think i might resort to hard wiring some tact switches from the keyboard controller as well for (ctrl-alt-left) and (ctrl-alt-up)... iPad style.. well, hit you up with some schematics and updates as i go along... ideas never stop coming

.... close your eyes and see, when there ain't no light
