The odd numbered pins are the row nearest the outside of the case, the even numbered pins are the inboard row. You should see a small "52" printed just above the pin nearest the front of the case on the inboard row. Just count backwards by 2's along that row.

Here's a question I've run into: after installing a usb hub to these usb lines, I keep getting the "this device could work faster if connected to a high speed port" message. Anyone else experience this?

I've read the post several times and don't see you specifically mention it, but did you remove the battery from the dongle in your effort to downsize? I see it in the first pic, but then just see the white dot that is on the board under it in the others. Did you simply remove it?

Another question as I am elbows deep in this mod, is there a more accessible source for the 5V? The leads on the track pad are so small, I am hesitant to try. Can 5V be pulled from one of the other external USB ports? Thanks in advance for any help, and thanks for the great post

Dave

If you search these forums, in one of these threads I posted a pic of the trace under the WLAN card that supplies the 5V to the touchpad connector. (as I recall, it's the trace that goes through the letter "L" ). If you scratch off a tiny bit of the blue coating, you can simply solder your power lead directly to that trace.

EDIT: Here, I found the link: viewtopic.php?f=11&t=167&p=3080&hilit=trace#p3080

I've seen that message when I have plugged a USB 2.0 device into a USB 1.x port. Was the USB hub you installed a 2.0 device?

Yes, at least that's what the packaging claims.

Ok, I have done this mod on my mini, and everything seems to be together good. But, I am having a couple problems.
1, how did you attach the gps module inside the case?
2, I have really poor reception half the time, even in the open air, sometimes it will obtain a couple of satellites, but for the most part it just constantly searches.

sounds like the antenna is grounding to the case; make sure the GPS receiver is electrically isolated from the computer except for the electrical connections (cover it in electrical tape where it is close to the electrical shielding)

Awesome mod! I agree, this should have been incorporated into the laptop from Dell. I would much rather this then bluetooth any day. I kick myself now for buying the bulky external Delorme GPS reciever. Maybe I'll have a look and see how big the Delorme is.
