Default IrDA on Mini9 - 12-11-2008, 06:21 AM

Just posting a heads up that I just finished my IrDA addon to my Mini9. I'm running OS X, and I took an IR receiver from a MacBook Pro, and the lens and installed it all in the screen portion of my Mini. I took plenty of pics, which I'll post tomorrow (later today I guess now). I use a standard Apple remote, and the range is phenomenal. Now I can give presentations in Keynote on it!!! The mod looks OEM, and part of it, as I used the lens. Looks like it is supposed to be there, not a hack job.

I used the spare PCIe connector for USB, took the 5+ from under the wireless card (of which I swapped out for a Macbook N card), and ground to an exposed solder mount point.

While I was in the screen, I routed my extra antenna for the N card, as I had it spiraled in the upgrade bay before. I'm so happy with this mod! I think next I'll swap out the spot for a USB hub and then solder from there, as I'd still like to put GPS in.

I use a Dell Mini9 with OS X, 2GB RAM, 16GB SSD, 802.11n Airport card, and IrDA.

Thats funny, I was thinking just that yesterday when I was messing with my MBP last night watching Netflix. I was thinking it would be great to have something small that I could run via IR. I would love to see the pics.

I made it easy and just did a Flickr Photostream of it, with notes!

PLEASE let me know what you think, or any questions!

I dig it. If I ever dig into trying to make IR activated controls for media playback, I might look into this. I have a USB IR controller already for my MythTV, so I might play around a bit. If I ever sit down and play with it, I will put some posts out on how to make it work.

Excellent photos. I think I might give this one a go on my mini so I can sync my palm via Ir. Thanks for the writeup.

What's also neat is because it's an Apple IR device, it'll run under Windows since they have drivers in bootcamp available for it. Dunno if it'd work in Ubuntu, but linux does have drivers to work with the Apple IR when installed on Apple hardware- just dunno if it's a drop in or needs to be compiled in.

You probably would just need LIRC installed. Linux will likely have the driver built in (albeit the Dell Ubuntu may not), but you would still need some software to pick up the IR commands.

Great job, kencept!

Hey, any chance you could list the part numbers for the Macbook IR board, Apple PCI-E 802.11n card, and extra antenna? Do you know of a good place to order these parts?

I'm considering installing a touch screen, GPS, and either IR or an internal flash memory upgrade. While I'm in there, I might consider upgrading the wireless card and antenna as well. This ebay seller seems to be a good source:

What's nice is that the circuit board has a USB hub, which makes adding two other devices much easier. Deldotb used one of these for his mod:

What's great is that there's still plenty of room to add the GPS:

If I end up doing it, I'll be sure to document it here!
