This is bad news for me as I use the HD password. It's more convenient than encrypting the drive or folders, which XP Home doesn't do by itself anyway. I already use Truecrypt on my data SDHC, and that can encrypt the boot partition, so I would need to use that. In return for a bit less convenience and reduced performance, Truecrypt would provide greater security than the drive password - more security on it than I really need though.

The 32GB STEC drive from Dell may turn out to be a better upgrade for me. I wonder if the Buffalo drives support the drive password; anyone out there got one yet?

That's the one thing on the mini that really bugs me, and I might get a Runcore if it would help.

ok, since you didn't specify, I played an mp4 file in Media Player and it played just fine. This was a dvd that I saved for my zune, file size was about 400mb.

Then I thought maybe you meant youtube. So I launched IE and loaded up some random video. it played ok too. then I realized that Media Player was still playing my other video while I was watching youtube, so I would say that I'm not seeing any video issues on my system with the Runcore drive. YMMV

Hi there, thanks for the info so far, been away from my PC for a couple of days.

In terms of video playback, what I have been having trouble with is high quality and HD youtube videos, and larger video files (such as .mkv format videos of higher than dvd resolution). For avi files at least, of good bitrates and dvd resolution or lower, I've been okay with... and I know I might be being a bit ambitious trying to play this kind of file but it just so happens I occasionally want to watch a HQ youtube vid or a fansubbed episode of anime.

Those might be one of the very few things the Mini12 is better at than the Mini9.. Or at least, that's how they advertise it. Very few people have been willing to spend more than the price of a new laptop on a Netbook that's crippled to 1gb of ram, so we haven't gotten many reports.
You may just be stuck down converting it, one of the MKV videos that was just beyond my Mini9's ability to play was 720p HD.. Well 720p is overkill since our screen is only 600 lines tall.. 120 lines have to be tossed out from each frame, which might be where most of the problem lies.
