Default Mini9 Configuration questions - 10-20-2009, 07:52 PM

After toying with my friend's mini9 I'm really tempted to get one for use as a web/car diagnostics/travel pc. The low price point and no moving parts are my favorite points.

I would, of course, modify it. Does anyone know if this combination is possible?

Buy a Vostro A90-16GB-BT for $250ish
Buy a giant battery for $65

Option 1:

-Solder in miniPCIe slot
-install Broadcom crystal HD card in the new PCIe slot

Remove a USB port
-wire in:
USB hub
16GB flash drive
GPS receiver
RS232->USB adapter.
Hack the empty USB port a little bit wider and use it for a dedicated 9-pin RS232 port.

Toss in 2GB ram and run Windows XP

Option 2:

Skip the Broadcom crystalHD card

Wire in a usb hub/16gb flash drive/gps/serial adapter
cut a port in the left-hand side of the mini for a dedicated 9-pin RS232 port

Computer-1737 Core2Duo 2.1ghz/2MB|4GB DDR2|2x500GB SATA|512MB ATI|BT370|b/g/n|
Tempted by an A90 every day....

while both options are technically possible, they depend more on YOUR capabilities. You would be surprised at what some people can do, and what others totally botch up.

There is not a lot of room for the serial port adapter, that would be the biggest challenge assuming you are fluent with doing fine soldering work.
