Hi there! Thanks for your comments on my project! I see that you are building a tablet too.

I'm looking for an extra pair of monitor hinge. Since you probably don't need them for your project, can I buy them from you? Thanks!

Sorry, I cut my original ones, and ended up needing them in the original condition to make the 3rd iteration work properly. I bought a pair off ebay for about $10 shipped. Dell Mini 910 Set LCD Hinges w/ Rails - eBay (item 280373435115 end time Oct-17-09 22:52:30 PDT)

He had more than one set, but the auction is ended. He may have more, just ask Good luck!

Rock, have you found any way to rotate the OSX display to portrait? I was looking into that and it doesn't seem possible...

I'm thinking about a tablet but I'll probably go back to Windows because of this :\

That's a negative. After going through this thread Rotate Display in OS X for ebooks. I have not seen anything that can conclusively rule it out. I found some Apple Scripts and 3rd party software that only automated the motions of enabling it through the Sys Prefs, but that did no good because the option was never visible .

I then came across this software.... SMSRotateD, it will rotate the screen when the rotate option is not available in the Sys Prefs. The only problem is, that it checks for the SMS (Sudden Motion Sensor) built into macbooks. The software fails to execute on the Mini after checking for the sensor. In the forum for this software (uninhabited since 2007 as far as I can tell) Mac OS X Internals: The Book :: View topic - Tablet-style Automatic Screen Orientation , Amit Singh (the author of the software) says he will gladly release a version not checking for the sensor, though he never does (I can see that he now works for Google. Lucky!) The source code for the program is supposedly located here: http://osxbook.com/book/src/singh-src.tar.bz2 One of my developers is about to look into it for me, see if we cant get this situation taken care of. If not, this install will be going the way of Windows 7, as I already have a working solution for screen roatation there.

Thanks. I'll probably just go to Win7 anyway, just to have the better touch support/keyboard.

I'm really liking your "Project A" style tablet. I tore my mini apart last night and that style just seems so right. I'm thinking of making a customer heat spreader to avoid all of the problems of hacking apart the palm rest, but I'm still worried about heat buildup. Thinking about better venting, a micro-blower (if I could even find one for sale), or even a peltier module but I think that's a last resort.

So I'm really following in your footsteps. The lid fits so nicely on the base that I think my screen is going to be going in there. I still want it to be offset like Project A, because I want to add gamepad controls on the left and right of the battery. Not sure how I'm going to mount anything, but.. well, just blabbering. This is a fun project

I never received a response regarding that rotation software, so "The Mac Mini" project is on hiatus for now. I installed Windows 7 (retail) last night and boy is it snappier than the RC. My touchscreen is being delivered today, so I will be up lat tonight getting everything together.

"Project A" really does look slick doesn't it? It's still a possibility, though my fabrication skills are nill, and I like the clean/simple look of what I currently have. Peltier would be cool (pun), but that heat still has to exit the device somehow. I considered a micro fan/blower, but I do not want to compromise the awesome battery life that I get with it I also never went that route, because I didnt find an easy way to secure the screen to the body. Of course it would be simple enough to put something on top of it to hold in place by pressure, but that may have adverse effects on the touchscreen, and could also damage the screen electronics being too close to the heat spreader.

You an I are in the same boat! What a fun project I believe I will start another thread for the Windows version of this. Stay tuned for my sub $20 accelerometer guide for auto-screen rotation.

I got my touch screen kit yesterday and installed last night. I don't know how it is with OS X, but it works great with W7. Although I wouldn't go entirely with out the mouse though, as small as the screen is and big as my fingers are, I'd have to use the stylus the majority of the time.
Some ideas are brewing in my head though from you and Nevon.......

I've pretty much given up on OSX. I could not get my motion sensor recognized by the OS, nor the GPS unit. W7 is probably the best way to go, it is VERY touch friendly. I would have an easier time if the bezel wasnt so thick around the edge of the display, as I have major dificulty touching the red X.

New progress with Windows 7 tablet here:
