I should have looked at this previous post for an example of my keyboard, which Dunhamzzz calls a "UK" keyboard. But so far using the Fn-K trick doesn't enable all those keys. Wonder how he got it to work...

Replacement Keyboard more normal (US-Intl)

^^ That's a UK keyboard. We have the the @ on the same key as apostrophe and the double quote on number 2. Dunno why, its one of the major problems I have to fix when people I know buy new computers! (the language always defaults to US which is wrong as far as our keyboards are concerned).

If you're having problems with the pipe key key and the square brackets not working, you'll need to do the start procedure as described here, using Ctrl + K for UK.
The procedure is meant to be used when you swap the keyboard over anyway, though I'd imagine it defaults to US which is why it isn't completely dead.

audio_inside, just a suggestion but try the Fn-K trick after you've shut down your mini, vs. a restart. Take the battery out and disconnect the power for a couple of minutes before you start it. That way it'll be more like the state the machine would be in if you replaced the keyboard.

Hello all. I have a silly question. My Vostro A90 just arrived in the mail. I'm preparing to put OS X on it.

At the moment it's running Ubuntu. When I booted up for the first time, I recall it asked me what keyboard layout I had, and for some reason, after reading this forum for a few weeks I got it in my head that the Vostro had the US-intl keyboard, so I chose that instead of the standard US keyboard.

And obviously, upon closer inspection it does in fact have the standard US keyboard, but now it's set to recognize the intl. keyboard. My apostrophe key does not work properly; I double tap it and I get an accent.

Will the fn-K trick restore the keyboard to the proper US default? I've looked in the system settings in Ubuntu and can't figure out another way to fix this.

Like to get this minor problem solved before I start the OS X install. I've found plenty of information on how to change the keyboard layout to the intl. layout, but none on how to change it BACK.

Thanks in advance!

Use Fn-S for the US keyboard.

My hero!

(now to get OS X on this thing)

---------- Post added at 05:23 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:05 PM ----------

Hmm. It doesn't seem to have worked. I even turned it off and took the battery out for quite some time.

I did:

-reinstalled battery
-held fn-s for a few seconds
-plugged power adapter in
-held and then released fn-s
-powered up

Same deal. The strange double tap on the apostrophe/quote key get's me an accent still. I must be doing something wrong.

You told the OS that you had a US-International keyboard. This isn't necessary even if you have one, and one of the side-effects is this odd accent behavior (which some people would want, but not everyone.) Undo that setting.

I've been sifting through this thread in order to find a source of the better International keyboard to replace my US one with two broken keys. No way am I paying $60+ for it, so I will have to live with the US-style. I was looking on fee-bay and there seem to be plenty of people selling the US-style keyboard for about $15-20

Is it any good, or should I order directly from Dell? Has anyone had any problems with these keyboards as some seem to claim to be OEM while others are "replacement" (knock-offs.)

You shouldn't have a problem with people selling US keyboards. They may be like me who ordered the US-Intl keyboard and had the US one left over (already sold mine - sorry.) I doubt there will be knock-offs of this.

Thanks. It hurts to give my quest for the Intl. keyboard, but I can't live any longer without a functioning backspace key.

I'll try out one of the US keyboards and post if it sets my mini on fire or not...

For anyone else going through this latest addition to the keyboard thread, be careful wen shopping around on fee-bay as I have come across the terms:

* 100% manufacturer compatible
* Competible [sic] With P/N: M958H
* Equivalent Replacement Part
* OEM Equivalent Replacement

So be forewarned...
