Default Wireless Card and SSD upgrade... - 09-20-2009, 09:19 PM

Question 1: I was wondering if any of the wireless card upgrades for the Mini 9/A90 will increase range/signal strength? I have a really weak signal, it still works, but sometime packets won't send. Do any of the other options increase strength? (Must work with W7)

Question 2: I just ordered a Runcore 32GB SSD for $120, but it is backordered. Are there any other SSD options from other companies that have similar speed, or atleast better than the stock SSD? I would prefer 32GB, but if there is a cheap enough 16GB that offers increased speed, I would look into that as well. I feel like I may not utilize the Runcores speed as much as some of you, so if there are some other options that offer good bang for buck value, I will consider. Thanks in advance!

Check out the threads on the 'new' SuperTalent drives. Their new model is quite comparable to the Runcore you're waiting on.

I'd suggest opening up the hatch/cover on the bottom of your mini and making sure: 1) that both antenna wires are hooked up to your LAN (wifi) card and 2) the correct colors are attached. That is white wire to the post by the white triangle on the card, black wire to black post. I think the best b/g card is the Intel card, but its a Windows only card I believe, no OS X for sure and also no Linux driver I believe. Can't offer any advice about a b/g/n card.

The Intel 5100/5300 is supported under Linux, but indeed not OS X.

Thanks for the responses. I am not worried about Linux or OSX support, it would be nice, but not necessary. Due the 5100/5300 increase range at all?

I found it does, and others have reported similar findings.

Thanks holmes, that is helpful, I may eventually get one, but for now, my new wrt54gl and dd-wrt firmware extended our wireless range dramatically. That along with a wireless repeater, i am pretty satisfied at the moment for my mini.
