Default Has anyone with WWAN tried a second SSD? - 11-29-2008, 03:39 AM

I'm curious if anyone with the Wireless port enabled motherboard has tried installing a second SSD?

I would love to have more storage, and the card slot looks to be the same size...

Does anyone know if this works?

Don't think this works diff pinout and size issue...

FWIW: inserted the SSD into the WWAN Mini-PCIe connector of a Studio 17 notebook, wasn't recognized by Vista...

It will not work. The SSD PCI-e slot actually has the IDE bus wired to the spare pins. It's screwy and proprietary. You can't use anything else in the SSD slot, and you can't use the SSD in any other slots.

Oooh! The spare pins are an IDE bus? I wonder if a small card could be made to twist around those pins to a Compact Flash connector. That would open up tinkering with surplus microdrives and other things. Does anyone know where I look to find out the pinout of the SSD connector?

The pinout is not documented anywhere that I have been able to find yet. To find the hard drive activity LED output (pin39 of a standard IDE cable) I had to get the pinout of the controller chip on the MDD SSD, then follow that pin out to the connector. Using that technique, you could reverse engineer all the pins, and build the board you are thinking of.
I imagine the pinout is SOMEWHERE on the net, I doubt MDD and RunCore just built their drives without a spec sheet somewhere.

I think it'd be possible to have a master and a slave SSD, if you really got elbow deep into that PCI-e slot..

I found a page with the standard Mini-PCIe pinouts on it http://www.interfacebus.com/Mini_PCI_Express_Bus.html#e I wonder what what happen if you wired out the reserved pins between the two connectors. Maybe the IDE bus is on there. The problem would be I think that you would need BIOS support as well.

There aren't enough reserved pins for PATA IDE, they apparently also reassigned some of the pins they knew wouldn't be used for the SSD. Like anything PCI related, the USB bus, who knows what else since we haven't come across the correct pinout yet.

Lot's of good thoughts here. I hadn't thought about a secondary IDE type flash drive off of the first connector, but it's a really good thought and I wouldn't be surprised if there is some way to do it.
