I've found it takes a good deal of heat to melt the factory solder and rather than fry the board trying to desolder the connectors, I simply cut them off with a small sidecutters. I know that sounds crude, but it works and it leaves behind nice metal contact points for soldering on wires.

I usually find it helps to add a bit of my own solder to the factory solder, and it seems to melt easier.

For removing solder, desoldering braid is very effective. You can buy it at RadioShack.
