Default turning a dell mini 9 into tablet. Possible? - 08-20-2009, 08:36 AM

Hello

I just saw a thread of a guy on myHPmini who is turning is HP mini into a tablet (MyHPMini.com • View topic - HP Mini Tablet Mod!!). The mod is not finished yet but I am wondering if you heard about similar mod with a dell mini 9.

Do you think it is possible? If no, why not?
About removing the keyboard, how to do without it? Is there any application to manage it or do I just need to plug a USB keyboard or a BT one?

Thank you

USB or BT keyboard would be great, but your OS should support an on-screen keyboard(or if you are on XP, Tablet edition can be blended into the install) if you want the full tablet effect.

The easiset tablet mod I have ever seen was done over on eeeuser- they literally flipped the lcd (NOT the bezel, JUST the LCD) and cut out the lid to fit. It turned out pretty nice for the very little work involved, and it left a lot of room for the touchscreen. EeeUser Forum / my own tablet mod, not finished yet

I turned one of my Dell Minis into a tablet.

I installed Win7, which has great touchscreen support, an OSD, and if I need it, I plug in a USB keyboard/touchpad combo.

It's not quite finished yet as the edges haven't been filled in and I'm still trying to decide how I want to vent it (maybe install an internal fan?). I can upload pics once I return home.

I was wondering if you could take the whole top off hinge and all, along with the keyboard, and cut out the trackpad, and put the screen where the keyboard and trackpad are. Then you could put the screen bezel over top of it so it looks nice.

Actually, you might not even have to mod the trackpad are, just place the screen on top of it,and glue the bezel over it to hold it down. You would need to mod the bezel tho, unless you could live with the hinge pieces sticking up...

You want to leave the big metal piece the keyboard sits on as that is the heatsink for the chips.

So... what I did was remove the lid, flip it around, and glue it to the keyboard bezel. I took the trackpad guts out and trimmed the hinges off the lid.

Now I just need to finish relocating the power button (i made the wires too short in the beginning), make covers for the empty spaces where the hinges were, and fill in the gaps between the lid and the screen bezel.

I'll get pics up tomorrow when I return home.

Thank you for your reply
And yes, photos are welcome.

I watched and read many tutos of guys turning netbook into tablet and I am really interested.

One question, do you think it is possible to add some buttons around the screen? Like a right/left mouse ones. And why not a mini stick to navigate.
Maybe I ask for too much since there is probably not so much space around the screen.

My plan is to make an hackintoshed mini 9 tablet

Ok, here are the first shots. I don't have any pictures of it in it's current state yet.

First step: Disassembly

Strip the lid

Mark areas to trim the lid

Glue the lid to the bezel

Trim the hinges

More to come...

Here's the tablet in its current state:

A few other angles... you can see it needs some finishing work.

Disassembly - Bezel off

Screen off

Keyboard bezel/lid off
