BIOS and non-Dell batteries ... - 05-16-2009, 07:16 PM
All, I thought I'd share my experiences with my new Dell Mini 9. I got a refurb from PC disposal and general IT disposals for redundant computer equipment, and to my surprise it came with an non-Dell extended battery instead of the standard Dell one (I don't know if it's six cell or eight cell - how would I tell?). Well, to be honest, I don't mind the extra size and weight and looked upon this as a bonus.
However, the only minor problem was that XP didn't report the amount of time left on the battery, just a percentage, so I upgraded the BIOS to A05 (I didn't note what I was currently running). That worked a dream, it now said 'Xhrs Ymins', so I was a happy man - until I plugged the power back in. Then I got the flashing power and battery lights, and on reboot, a message saying the battery wasn't recognised.
After an amount of panic, I discovered the USB flash route to downgrading BIOS, took the machine back to A00, (A04 didn't work, didn't try the rest) and all is well again. I'll live without knowing the time until the battery dies (unless anyone has a work around).
Anyone had similar experiences?

The "resolution fix" is where, on booting into the OS, the screen is set at 800x600 until a program runs to fix it. With A02 and later, the resolution is correct without the added program.

Extended battery - 09-12-2009, 12:39 AM
Does anybody know which extended battery, if any, works under A05?
I have a few emails out to vendors asking explicitly whether their (8-cell, typically) batteries work under A05. Will post their answers.
So far, eBay Store - NOVAPCS: says NO!
Brilliantstore.com - Home Appliances, Air Conditioners, Computer Hardware, Laptop Batteries is testing and will let me know
