Clicking Sound or Noise suddenly appears with move of screen - 05-05-2009, 06:03 AM
OS X (if that helps... but I'm thinking this is more of a hardware issue).
Anyway. I've had the Mini for about two weeks now. Beautiful little thing.
It's a 32GB running OS X and was wonderful until about twenty minutes ago when it suddenly started clicking like a cricket chirp. Very weird. It starts rhythmically then ebbs and flows until I can't take it anymore.
I thought it might be something on a webpage. So I closed down the browser. Nope.
I've discovered a sure-fire way of starting it up, though. Bend the screen back beyond 90%. Away it starts.
I've muted the sound easily except that turns off all my audio and I've tried inserting and leaving out my usual SD card but that doesn't affect things.
I don't have any touchpad mods so it's not that.
I've tried booting up on battery. Nope. Clicking ensures.
I've got the Mini plugged in 95% of the time. Booted up. Nope. Clicking restarts.
And it isn't tied to the screen only bending back beyond 90%, the clicking starts at any time and moving the screen seems to remedy the situation... until it starts again.
Most bizarre and it literally just started while the Mini was sitting on a table (and, no, it's not overheated).
UPDATE: don't know why I didn't think of testing this yesterday but I tried a video file (.wmv and .avi) today and, sure enough, the sound cuts in and out to the rhythm of the clicks - whether or not I'm listening with or without headphones.
Does this have something to do with the sound drivers? And can someone point me in the right direction to reinstall just the sound drivers? A big reason for getting the Mini was to watch my mlb.com baseball game videofeeds and I can't do that with the incessent clicking
UPDATE UPDATE: after shutting down a few times to check something out, I see that the clicking starts even before Darwin starts up in the boot process. On the other hand, I did get rid of the 'sleepimage has garbage - hibernate failed' error message I hadn't noticed I'd been getting
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE: so, found this: http://mydellmini.com/forum/clicking...it-p55860.html but the OP states in his first post that he hits 'mute' and he still gets the noise. In my case, I hit 'mute' and the noise goes away. Huh... . At least that seems to remove the idea of the motherboard going... .

After trying some other remedies and talking to Dell support and getting nowhere, I think it's pretty obvious that this is a hardware issue since the clicks can start from the moment I hit the 'on' button, while I'm in the BIOS screen that's not dependent on OSX yet and the clicks will temporarily (but immediately) stop if I physically move the screen.
More on this issue over at viewtopic.php?f=23&t=7780
I've sent an email to Dell.ca and requested a CRA number to start the return process.
And the thing was becoming so indispensable to me, too, and just today I got my Dell Belkin carrying case and a separate sleeve and the US-Intl keyboard's on its way
God Lord... I just realized. I'm going to have to reinstall OS X on the next one. Ack!!
If Dell gives me hassles, stay tuned for a new whine thread about Dell Canada's customer service

your problem doesn't sound like anything else i've read about on the board possibly related with software. so, yeah it's sounds most likely it's a problem with the hardware.
so, maybe you answered this, but do you have the problem with the original OS, linux, or windows?
