Default FN + 2 (WIFI BUTTON) Not working....... - 11-06-2008, 03:04 PM

Hello Everyone,

I think I might be going crazy here......but I've re-installed XP a few times and every time, after I've installed all the drivers....the FN+2 (WIFI Radio Enable/Disable function) never works!

Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I know that Dell's Support Site has an application for the battery meter......and they define it as 'Dell Battery Meter/Wireless Select Switch'...but even after I've installed this app, that Function key does nothing.

Is there any additional step necessary after installing this application?

The wifi card that this machine came with is the Broadcom card.

Any help here would be appreciated!

THX!

I had the Fn keys not working on the first two and the last 6 keys of the secod row. [ ] { } \ |
Dell worked on it and finally stated that there was something wrong with the mother board. They took the machine back and I am supposed to get it back next week.

THX! I'm afraid of calling them since it might boil down to me sending the machine back.

Did your WIFI button work?

Ok...just spent 2 hours via Dell Chat with a Dell support rep (most likely from India) and they told me in a nutshell that this feature IS NOT SUPPROTED on this model.

Here's text from the chat itself:

Thank you for staying online

(me) No problem~

I consulted my supervisor on the issue as well and this feature is not an option available on the Inspirion 910 system.

(me) OK...does Dell have any document stating so or any webpage?

This system is a basic portable system and that is why it does not have the advanced function features of the keyboard.
You can check the Manual of the system for the documentation.

(me) Ok...I will check and let you know.

Thank you. Your Dell Chat session has ended.

Then the rep ended my session.

The only thing that I have in my possession is the setup guide....and it mentions nothing about this DARN key!

Can anyone confirm that this key works/doesn't work?

THX!

It works just fine if you have the software loaded correctly. I seem to remember that it is mislabeled on Dell's website, but there is a utility you must install to get the functionality.

There should be a green W icon in the your system tray (the process is called WLSS.exe), and when you press Fn-2 you should see a pop up that lets you turn on and off the wireless.

It's this one:

Dell Battery Meter/Wireless Select Switch
Release Date: 9/10/2008
Version: 1.0.0.9, A00

http://ftp.us.dell.com/app/R192570.EXE

(or select 'Other versions' on the published version 0.0.0.3C, A00)

Works on XP and Vista.

I had the same challenge after reinstalling XP, then using the Dell website to get the drivers.

I ended up just grabbing the installation CD for that file -- it seems as though the web site doesn't have it labelled correctly -- there's a newer battery monitor package, but it doesn't install the wireless switch software.

Gotta love when the Indian tech support can't figure out something that is clearly labelled on the keyboard which is very obviously made just for this model.

Yes KrisB...you are correct!

On the Dell support site, that updated download only has the battery application and NOT the WIFI switching app.

I've had to go to the drivers CD in order to find it as well!

Lost 2 freaking days in order to fix this issue.....and Dell is freakin' clueless!
