When I ordered my mini I also ordered the DVD drive to make reloading the OS and installing software simpler. After I got everything yesterday I aligned the partition on the 64 GB RunCore SSD
and put it in the computer. To preserve the alignment I decided to reinstall XP from scratch instead of cloning the drive.
But the “Made for Dell” DVD player made by IOGear would not work. As soon as the drive spun down during pauses in the install it would report errors instead of spinning up and resuming. I could copy files and installed other software just fine using this drive. It was only when I tried to install XP the drive failed. I went to a local Fry’s and bought a USB drive made by Buffalo which worked fine.
If anyone is relying on this drive to reinstall the OS be wary. The one I had worked with a software install that did not pause during the installation and only failed when I tried to install XP. I thought having the DVD would make things much easier than making a bootable flash drive but at this point I wonder if that alternative would have been less trouble.
As soon as I get an RMA number the drive is going back to Dell.
Has anyone else tried to load XP with this drive? I am curious if I just had a bad sample or if this is a firmware problem in the drive common to all of them.
