Default Ubuntu wireless problem in Jaunty 9.04 - 04-17-2009, 04:46 AM

I am having the strangest problem with the wireless on my Mini 9. When I first got it and using the Dell image, wireless worked on my WPA network like a champ. Then Update Manager indicated I should install 191 updates, and after that things went haywire. The network would not connect, then I tried a wide open (no security) access point, and it still wouldnt connect. I thought perhaps something went wrong with the install, so I am now running Jaunty 9.04 Netbook Remix (which I love by the way) on my new Runcore SSD. I can get it to connect only if I have one network listed in the Network Settings at a time, and only if I let it fail the first time, cancel the connection, then click the network again in Network Manager. Seems to also fail If there is more than one network listed in the config. This driving me nuts for two solid days now.

Any ideas? I am using WRT-54GL routers with DD-WRT installed on both. I've also tried a standard ol Linksys router with no security at all, same issues.
Thx in advance

I am not real tech savvy in linux but did have the same issue you described and did fix it by disabling the broadcom in hardware driver...My guess is that it trys to install two hardware drivers? Hope this helps but like I said I am kind of a noob when it comes to linux...But I'm learning.

System>administration>Hardware Drivers>Broadcom STA wireless driver

Had to make sure mine was DISABLED "Not in use"

Thanks for the reply. Does the Hardware Drivers list show two drivers on your machine? Mine only shows Broadcom STA.

I have the same problem with my dell mini 9
Today I've installed Ubuntu Jaunty Netbook Remix from usb stick; the installation was succesful without any problems except the wifi connectivity.

The Broadcom driver is in status Enabled in 'Rescricted Drivers' but if i click on network manager I can't see wireless network around me.
I've tried to disable, reboot and re-enable the driver but it doesn't work.
lspci show network wifi card and lsmod modules too.

In bios settings the WLAN capability is Enable.
Bios version is A04

Any ideas?
thanks indeed

This usually works for me:
1. Right click on the Network Manager icon. Select connect to hidden SSID, enter the information for your router including security info
2. Wait for the connection to fail and ask for you to re-enter the password. Instead of entering PW, click Cancel.
3. Wait for notification that wireless not connected/
4. Left click Network Manager icon, select your SSID listed

It will usually connect 30 seconds or so later.

Wireless in Ubuntu (linux in general) stinks. This is the second linux machine I've had with essentially the same problem.

I have switched my router's wireless security to TKIP only from TKIP/AES, and the Mini is connecting consistently and relatively quickly now. Delete all your connections listed in Network Manager, change your router to TKIP, and try again. Good luck.

That's interesting....
I don't have my A90 yet but I bownloaded 9.04 UNR and tried it out on my D630 laptop (without installing). I have my network setup to use TKIP and it would not connect. I had to change to AES to get it to connect. It seemed that 9.04 only supported AES and not TKIP but you're saying the opposite.

I tried disabling my broadcom driver... that did NOT work for me.
I got my wireless connection working only after booting from Windows XP and toggling the FN-2 switch in that environment. The FN-2 doesn't seem to work with ubuntu Jaunty 9.04. My guess is if you switched the wireless card OFF, before installing Jaunty 9.04, you may have the same problem I did. Once I rebooted ubuntu, the local APs finally started showing up, and I could finally connect. (I run Ubuntu from an 8GB SDHC memory card, grub is on the SSD so I can boot it.)

Anyone know how to get the FN-2 key working properly please post it or a link to the info.
