The sticky squares are thermal gap fillers. Berquist, Thermagon and others make them. I used them in various designs on the job. The issue is that the metal plate heat in the Mini 9 once accepted the heat, has no continued conduction path. The heatsink is basically a limited plate buried in there. To make matters worst, with just a limited piece of metal to heat up, there is a plastic palm rest and keyboard laying on top of the heated plate that wishes to at least see open air. If longevity is important, best to run it with a fan accessory under Mini 9. Even if mini could stabily do simpler web pages with limited flash video, the northbridge temperature is no good for long life. And when larger and higher frame rate flash is processed, as in Hulu or movie watching, or action games, fan really should be used.

Got my fan on eBay: $10. Gimmicky w/ 2 LEDs, but it does angle the keyboard for easier typing. Misquoted earlier. I meant DPMS when blanks the screen, not DPMI, causes the northbridge heat load to almost disappear (northbridge sleeping). A less than perfect fan within a netbook or laptop has another issue for those doing Skype or DellChat as I do: noise... the internal mic picks up the fan noise making separate mic necessary. With worn fan, mic in laptop nearly useless. External fan tray small enough to carry along. Most workable solution.
