Default BIOS A04 update "breaks" the webcam? - 02-13-2009, 05:31 AM

After installing the BIOS A04 (before the DOS only version released on 2/8/2009), it was noticed that the webcam stopped functioning on my Dell Mini 9. A Dell tech was unable to resolve the issue from chat/remote session ; so the netbook was shipped to a repair depot where the issue(s) were resolved (sort of). Per the letter with the returned mini, the "OS Restore" and "Others" boxes for corrective repair action were checked. No explanation for "Others" was supplied. Per the BIOS screen, the system has A00 now.

It appears that the BIOS A04 update "breaks" the webcam. Has anyone else experienced this issue? I'm trying decide to return it for a refund or swap especially if others are not experiencing this problem.

P.S. The Service Tag did not change; so it should be the same system. I would have reverted back to BIOS A00 myself; however a backup of A00 was not available. And I did not find the A00 version on the Dell website until I shipped it to the repair depot.

Nope upgraded my machine to A04 way back in December. No breakage of the webcam.

Based on the comments here, I took a chance...and installed the DOS only A04 BIOS update released 2/8/2009 using the helpful post below to create an usb boot drive. The webcam did not "break" this time. Thanks everyone for your comments.

Dell support could not give a detailed explanation of "Others" box; so I still do not know if any repairs were specifically for the webcam.

To make a DOS bootable USB flash drive:
Download these :
HP Flash drive Utility
Boot files
Unzip both.
Install the HP utility. Run it, select your flash drive, FAT32, And the option to make the drive bootable.
Locate the boot disk files from the second zip file.

Ran the A04 BIOS updater from within Windows XP, and everything went smoothly. Camera still works, no problems.

Sold my Mini 9 for a larger netbook, one that's easier on my wrists and hands.
Current Machine: 2010 MacBook Pro 13", 2.4 GHz C2D, 4GB RAM, Win7 Pro x64/OS X 10.6.3

And I play with my girlfriend's Mini 10v ^_^.

Interested in using MATLAB on the Mini 10v? Check out my benchmarks!
