Default 10 seconds freezes after replacing SSD - 01-30-2009, 07:48 PM

My SSD died and Dell sent in a replacement. I know it's a different kind because it doesn't look the same at all. The new one has a heatsink so it gave me hope that it would be better than the previous one.

Ever since I installed it, I've been experiencing random and semi-frequent periods where everything becomes unresponsive for about 10-15 seconds. I've diagnosed it as the SSD or SSD interface by looking at dmesg:

Jan 19 18:12:22 hostname kernel: [ 219.806299] ata1.00: exception Emask 0x0 SAct 0x0 SErr 0x0 action 0x2 frozen

Jan 19 18:12:32 hostname kernel: [ 229.993815] sd 0:0:0:0: [sda] Write cache: enabled, read cache: enabled, doesn't support DPO or FUA
I ran the Dell diagnostics a few times and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary with the SSD itself. Could it be software incompatibilities? I searched on the web and it seems that this is fairly rare but I found a few other cases where this happened with other hardware, the fix almost always was a newer kernel.

I am using Ubuntu UMPC (8.10) and the Dell Ubuntu (8.04) and error happens with both.

I am a bit scared to call Dell again. I wasted a lot of time last time I called them trying to explain that I had Ubuntu and that the windows screen never came up and that I had no F12 available on my keyboard. I guess I will eventually get annoyed enough to call them

Thank you!

Call Dell back, demand a whole new machine. That's unacceptable.
