Default new ssd seen in bios but cant install win7 - 01-01-2012, 03:59 PM

long story but been given a 910 mini to see if i could get working

ssd was recognised in bios but trying to install from usb stick i kept getting io errors and ssd not being recognised by xp, vista or win 7 installs so i bought a new super talent 16gb drive

created a new win7 usb and booted it, install went fine until it restarted and was finalising installation and then just hung on a blinking cursor.

restarted a new installation but everytime i get to copying windows files it fails with cant see partition - even though when you get to advanced choices like format, load driver etc it sees the ssd (as does bios)

tried doing an xp install and again i get to the format this drive as ntfs/fat (quick etc) it tries to format but then fails saying cant recognise drive

i cant believe that a brand ssd would fail after 30 minutes ?

I've seen this same story play out many times in this forum, with the exact same symptoms. It does indeed appear to be a failure in the SSD.

I find it hard to believe too, but I have seen too many reports of this, and when users get a replacement it is fine.

so why can i use an elevated cmd prompt (shift f10 from win7 install start page), use diskpart completely fine, clean all, create partitions, run a chkdsk etc but when installing, regardless of the the os it fails? - i dont understand

Me neither, but you're far from the first to report this. My theory is that it has something to do with the SSD's method of keeping track of available blocks.

ok an update - on attempt on win7 install it successfully created a 100mb system partition (then of course went tits up)

using gparted on a usb i can see the 2 partitions and successfully format it to fat32 - formatting to ntfs brought up $mft input/output errors - so i formatted and tried win7

of course win7 says now that it cant run on fat32 so it wants to format it to ntfs - install goes ok until partway into creating the windows folder structure and i get a bunch of corrupt folder errors

going back to a fat32 format ive tried installing xp but on the first restart i get the dreaded hal.dll error

i am really loathe to send the ssd back as faulty as i'm in spain and it came from the uk and i have a feeling that the same will happen again anyway

so has "anyone" ever managed to install xp on fat32 on a 910 mini? if so - how
