Default DM9 - Capacity and Transparency - 01-01-2012, 10:27 AM

I have not touched this baby for a while, but have the itch once more.

My daughter has used it a few times and has maxed out the HDD iwth 80KB remaining.

I have searched high and low on this SSD, and cannot see any major hits with GB's of apps/files.

The largest program/file I see is 685MB.

I want to free up whatever space is consuming these GB's, but cannot because there is nothing of major size to remove.

What should be the SSD capacity after XP is installed (without any other SW installed?

How can I see where these used GB's are located?

Have you run the Disk Cleanup tool? XP itself typically takes about 8GB, though that can vary.

Thanks Steve.

I have now commenced Disk Clean Tool - it has detected nearly 6GB of stuff I can delete.

I am stunned to learn that XP takes 8GB - more than half the actual user capacity of the stock 16GB SSD.... :-(

What alternative SW can be used that consumes less space on the SSD?

I see you run the 64GB RunCore SSD - How do you like it?

What brand of RAM do you use?

With the huge blast of tablets and new age netbooks on the market these days, what do you use your DM9 nowadays for?

I have the original RunCore 64GB card, it's been three years now. It works fine, but like many of these older-design SSDs without TRIM, it slows down over time. The link you posted has a picture that does not look like the one I have, but it appears to be a newer model.

I use Kingston ValueRAM. And what I use the Mini for nowadays - not much of anything, to be honest. I had Windows 7 and Mac OS loaded for a while, but now that I inherited a MacBook from my brother I don't need the Mini for Mac OS. Currently it has Windows 8 loaded, but that was just to see if I could. The Mini sits on the shelf. I have an iPad 2 which has effectively replaced the Mini 9 for me.

If you want software that takes up less space, look at Linux.

Thanks Steve.

Yeah, it's amazing how the tablets have seemed to fill the notebook space.

DO you think tablets such as IPAD will kill off the small notebooks?

No - there is still a space for small notebooks. But more along the "Ultrabook" line than the netbook. The limitations of the under-$500 price tag are just too much for many people.
