Default Mini 9 not recognizing SSD intermittently - 12-23-2011, 03:09 PM

hi folks

having a bit of an issue with the SSD on my mini 9
it is a new runcore 16gb pro-iv model which i just installed today but have been having some issues. it is intermittently coming up with 'operating system not found' 'check cable' error messages and when i look into the bios on these ocassions, it is not 'seeing' the hdd'. if i take out the ssd and refit and make sure the interface connection is good and restart, then it works fine. problem is i'm doing this at least twice a day.

i am assuming there is something 'loose' in the ssd connection to the motherboard.

is it a big fix and what is commonly the issue or am i barking up the wrong tree and the problem is something else?

thanks in advance and happy holidays to all the forum users

regards

JG

here's the error message when it happens

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable.
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
Operating system not found.

That simply means that the BIOS did not find a bootable OS on the SSD. I have not heard of an intermittent issue such as this. You may have a broken trace either on the SSD or on the motherboard.

i've since flashed the BIOS with the latest version (was A06 now A07) and (fingers crossed) it seems to be working ok.......for now

---------- Post added at 11:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:02 AM ----------

spoke too soon....

just had the same error messages. dismounted the drive, rmoved and refitted and it works fine.

can anyone please advise if this is likely to be software or hardware related?
would it be worth running the recovery console and re-writing the boot record? i've ran msconfig and checked the boot path through that and no problems were reported.

i'm not terribly experienced when it comes to windows or DOS etc but any advice whatsoever is much appreciated

TIA

jonathan

Update:

tried the new ssd on another working dell mini9 and the nsame intermittent error message is coming up, therefore am i right in assuming that it is the hard drive that's most likely the problem?

thanks
