Default Repeated problem with mini 9 & sandisk sdhc - 07-24-2011, 10:40 PM

Ok, I just got a new sandisk 64gb sdhc card.

When i first put it in the card slot, the mini 9 tells me I have to format it. Ok, I go to format it & it says it cant. SO I do some research & find out I need a specific microsoft xp update to use the card (never had to do this with my toshiba or lexar cards). So I do that. Seems to work fine. But then it occasionally stops responding & never recovers. So i am forced to physically eject the card.... which corrupts it & makes it non-writable. So I do some research at sandisk & they recommend I reformat the card. So I have to transfer all the data off of it (to a portable HD), format it, then transfer the data back. WHich takes hours. This is just incredibly inconvenient to have to do repeatedly. I have had to do it twice now within the last two days.

Is there anything I can to do make this sdhc card work better with my mini? ANd keep it from becoming unresponsive.

Note: I cannot take the card back (its a nonreturnable item) and it is not a counterfeit.... I bought it from a major brick & mortar retailer.

I have never had this kind of problem with lexar & toshiba brand cards I own & have used in the past.

Win XP had a 32 GB limit so you needed that Win update in any computer to use a 64 GB SDHC. I recall Win XP having an option to safely remove a device, if that doesn't work for you then force a reboot. Hopefully your data won't be corrupted. I don't use Win much anymore, sorry I'm not more help than this.

This card is basically going to be useless to me uf it repeatedly locks up & has to be safely removed each time. Or if it cannot be... then reformatted each time.

It is not true that this is a Windows limit. The SDHC format, which the Mini 9 uses, maxes out at 32GB. To go above that you need an SDXC card, which the Mini 9 cannot use. Windows has nothing to do with this.

My memory might be wrong, I thought sure there was a Win XP update to go above the 32 GB barrier. Old age & senility has set in

You need a reader that has the added pins for SDXC. The Mini 9 doesn't have them.

did you use the drivers that I posted above for that to be recognized?

I KNEW it would work, I just dont have a 64gb card to test it....thank you for the confirmation though

I used the "WindowsXP-KB955704-x86-ENU.exe" (name of the file... I still have it on my desktop) that I found when I googled the sandisk sdhc problem before I even made the original post here.

edit: The card still sometimes goes unresponsive & I have to basically wait until it comes back. Still a pain though. I use the card as storage for torrented films I download. I have my utorrent client deposit the torrents directly into the card. I have found that when I attempt to watch a completed film from the card AND I am downloading a torrent.... that the card locks up. Seems it cant handle the load. So when i watch a film from it... i just make sure I am not using utorrent or downloading something.

One strange thing... ever since I started using utorrent with the card.... utorrent seems to quit, but its process is still running even though utorrent seems to close. I have to end the process & utorrent starts a recheck when it is eventually started up again. Again.. slightly annoying.
