Yes, if an external drive does not get enough power it can behave oddly. But I don't see the connection with the internal SSD. I agree that it seems odd that these would fail, but the explanation I have read is that the SSD controller's allocation table gets "full" and can't deal with it.
The only thing I have to suggest is doing a "secure erase". I have been meaning to try this on my SSD to see if I can bring its performance back but have not done so yet. You can get a free tool to do this at CMRR - Secure Erase
