Default Dead Mini 9 - No Beeps, just one flashing LED - 09-22-2010, 01:58 AM

Got this machine off ebay a month ago. SSD had apparently failed so got a new one from an old machine and it worked. Installed XP, Drivers etc.

I then left it on to do a windows update & did a clean disk at the same time (as I had over 2gigs worth of "compressed files" and 20mb space free.

Anyway left it on for a few hours and every now and then the screen would turn off which I assume is the battery saving thing on XP. Anway at the end I decided to move the trackpad to get the screen back on to check my progress and the whole thing stayed blank. Then I looked closer and the backlight had completely gone!

As I couldnt really see how to get to shut down, I just held the off button, but to my dismay it wouldnt power off. So I disconnected the power supply & battery.

Left it for a while as it was quite hot.

Turned it back on, and well it didnt turn on. After each press of the on button the power led would blink after a few seconds delay but then nothing else.

Tried replacing RAM/SSD/Battery. Tried battery in another dell mini 9 and it worked.

Got another 134 days left on warrenty.

Any clue as to what this problem can be?

sounds like the SSD died....I have seen when the battery dies or gets to a real low level the SSDs die....not for nothing but you couldnt get me to use an SSD for nothing..but with a Mini 9 you dont have any other options....I wouldnt get rid of my 750gb for nothing at least until SSD's get a lot more dependable (and cheaper)...some like Holmes have never had a problem..not sure what Steve's secret is.....

even with the SSD out, it is still dead.
I just left it on charge for 6 hours and pressed the on button and both the power & battery LED stayed on until it switched back off again when I picked it up.
Couldnt have been a short circuit as I have never dropped it and it was fine right until it did a windows update so must have been a coincidence that it turned off just as I picked it up.
Battery issue?

try without the battery...if it is the battery hopefully that didnt kill the SSD also

Interesting, this is the 1st time I have ever heard of a battery possibly killing a SSD. Lots of weird things do happen though.

I would be using that 134 days on your warranty for the SSD?

If the unit won't post then I suspect it may be more than a dead SSD, normally I would expect the unit to boot while on power to the bios. If it can't get to this point then I think your SSD may be OK and the mother board in an NBG state.

You could try unplugging the bios battery for 30 seconds, reset the ram and trying again if this fails suggest an enclose to test the SSD, if the SSD reads then I really do think the MB's gone to heaven.
