Default Dell Mini 9 SSD Bad Sectors? - 09-19-2010, 12:27 PM

My Dell Mini 9 SSD (standard 16GB) is not working - I cannot read from it / write to it / partition it.

I 'zeroed out' the disk when I was attempting to install OSX in Disk Utility - is this what broke it?

I've run some diagnostics from a CD and it appears there are 'bad sectors' but no program will repair them.

Is there anything I can do? I cannot return to Dell or seller as it was bought new via eBay. If there is no fix for my existing drive, will replacing the SSD with a new one fix the machine?

I've spotted this SSD, is this a good one: KingSpec IDE PATA Mini PCIe 32GB SSD TO Dell Mini 9 Akc on eBay (end time 14-Oct-10 12:17:14 BST)

(I don't want to spend too much money on a RunCore or similar.)

You've somehow fried your SSD. This is a rather common symptom and there's nothing you can do about it. I don't recommend Kingspec. If you can't afford RunCore, then look at SuperTalent (the GFDL series, not GFHL).

Unfortunately, I believe holmes4 is correct.

I would try Ubuntu on a thumb drive to see if it can see & repair your SSD. I have had good luck with Linux where windows couldn't even see the HD.
