Default wifi can't change access points - 08-27-2010, 01:01 AM

I'm having weird problems with the wifi on my mini9 running Ubuntu 10.04. After a boot it can connect to any access point fine. After that, if I suspend it it can reconnect to that same access point fine. If, however, I want to connect to a different access point, since the first one is no longer in range, it fails to connect. It also still lists the first one in the list of available access points with a strong signal, even if it is miles and miles away. Basically this means that any time I take my mini somewhere else I have to reboot it, which is very annoying. Any thoughts on how to make it work?

Open a terminal, then unload and reload the Broadcom wireless driver:
sudo modprobe -r wl && sudo modprobe wl
(sudo runs a command with superuser/root privileges, modprobe is used for removing (-r) and inserting kernel modules including drivers, and "wl" should be the driver used by the OEM Mini 9 Wifi card).

Give it a moment, then try looking for networks. This ain't a true fix, but it be interesting to know if it works.

Also, try "iwlist wlan0 scan" in a terminal to force the card to scan for wireless networks.

Finally, search the web for "broadcom linux suspend" or similar. Maybe you'll find something. For example, here's a bug report about something similar.
