Default Is this drive completely dead? - 07-15-2010, 05:09 PM

My 64 GB STEC drive failed last weekend and was replaced under warranty.

I have the original drive because (I am quite impressed by this, BTW) Dell returned it with the Mini 9 "for data recovery". I am supposed to send it back to them within 10 days.

Here's the question: Is it possible/practicable to recover the data?

While the dead drive was still installed, the bios was no longer reporting a 64 GB stec drive, but a 7 GB drive that was identified only by a series of letters and numbers. When I booted from a key, I could see an unmounted 7 GB drive in the disk utility, but I could not mount it or format it.

Before I ship it back, does anyone know if there is any non-heroic method to access the data?

I'd say no.

Same thing happened to my 16GB back in end of May.
I was unable to do anything to the drive but was able to retreive data using a Ubuntu Live USB w/ persistence.

All I was able to do was drag my pics and docs off the drive....wasn't able to get any windows data, nor did I care to.

Good Luck

footnote- When I tried to mount my SSD in Ubuntu, it would sometimes take more them 1 try and the system would hang for about 5 minutes.

The fact that the BIOS is misreporting the drive's stats is a bad sign. But I'd try to generate a disk image, anyway. I'd use a Linux Live CD/USB and standard Unix tools, like dd, but there are a thousand different ways to create a disk image.
