Default Diagnosing SSD problems (runcore) - 10-27-2009, 12:24 PM

Hey all,

Been having a serious SSD problem lately. Booted up 3 days ago to find my OS nuked with file system errors. I popped the runcore out of the mini and hooked it up another computer and the other computer reported that the disk was not readable. I've since reinstalled ubuntu on the runcore and am up and running again (abeit performance seems to have taken a hit, could be the new ubuntu I'm using, haven't tweaked it yet).

Ayhow, I was wondering if anyone knows of a tool to check my SSD for errors. Twice now I've booted up to "no media present" errors and had to open the back and basically.. jiggle the runcore a little (it's screwed in, but just pressing a bit fixed the problem). Additionally linux ocassionally shuts down and reports file system erorrs, though most of the time there's no problems.

I still have a long time left on the warrant, but before I RMA the disk to My digital discounts I want to be very sure something is indeed wrong with it. Any software to test read/write across the entire disk. I read that badblocks only checks read and that chkdsk isn't the best way to diagnose either. Something specific for SSD, or really any suggestions would help.

Cheers.

Hardware:
Dell mini 9
2 gigs ram
Runcore 16gb
Rest is stock.

The documentation for "badblocks" shows this option:
Code:
-w Use write-mode test. With this option, badblocks scans for bad blocks by writing some patterns (0xaa, 0x55, 0xff, 0x00) on
every block of the device, reading every block and comparing the contents. This option may not be combined with the -n
option, as they are mutually exclusive.
Be aware, it will hose any existing data.

You could also use a program to read SMART data, and see if there's a problem there. I'd use "sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda" in a terminal (after installing "smartmontools", if needed).

Ok I am having this issue now on my Dell Mini 9. I don't want to do anything silly as I have some very important data on this. Did you manage to recover data at all? Any help appreciated.

Thanks

The OP (Smegoid) has only one post (this thread), and it's from one year ago. He probably isn't around anymore to answer.

As for your problem, does the SSD show up normally in BIOS? With capacity correctly listed (8GB or 16GB or whatever)? If not, that's a bad sign.

Thanks for this.
Yes the BIOS sees the RunCore 64GB.
I took it out and connected to USB on another PC and scanned it using PC Inspector software. No files show up after the SCAN. The FileSystem is shown as RAW.

My SSD died as wel so I downloaded eith Peppermint (Mint0 linux or ubuntu and put it n a USB stick. I then booted my Mini 9 off the USB stick and ran a program that comes with peppermint or Ubuntu and it checked my SSD. I think it was peppermint and he program was Disk Checker or something like that.

OK - at the end, I borrowed my housemate's MAC Pro and connected the SSD via USB. The MAC seem to read the all date on the SSD without a problem. So, I have managed to recover all data. I am guessing the boot partition is corrupt and so am looking to repair this if I can from the MAC. Thanks for all your help and thoughts.

@cumar_chan - can you (or anyone else) be more specific about how you connected the SSD via USB to your Mac Pro? I am in the same situation and would like to try and recover my data. Did you load your Mini9 in verbose mode or single user mode? Did you need a special USB2USB cable to do this?

Thanks.

Some (All?) of the RunCore Mini 9 SSDs have a USB port builtin, which enables them to function as a common USB flash drive.

On a different SSD where the data/OS has become corrupted, but the drive isn't completely dead, I'd just boot the Mini 9 off a CD or USB drive (like a Linux LiveCD), then try copy files to somewhere safe. Either via the network or to a USB drive.

Or you can buy a RunCore Mini 9 SSD enclosure, which should enable any Mini 9 SSD to function as a USB flash drive.

Thx for the quick reply, reflex. Libuntu allowed me to copy what I needed to an external hard drive. Gna throw on some Duran Duran in honor of you now
