OS: Ubuntu flavor of linux
router: linksys wrt54g running dd-wrt firmware
filtering macs (yes, the dell mini mac address is added to the filter list)
security is wpa2, pre-shared key
When you disabled security, did you also disable the MAC filtering? I run linksys routers at home, all with dd-wrt, and have never once had a problem with a Mini-9 connecting to my routers wirelessly (Hardy through Karmic). I've used WPA and WPA2 at various times, but don't bother with MAC filtering as I find it an unnecessary PITA.
Occasionally I've seen network-manager get itself locked up to where it won't allow a laptop to initiate a connection. This problem is quickly fixed (if you stick with network-manager) by going into the network settings and DELETING all of the pre-configured wireless connections and starting from scratch. Or ditching nm for wicd.

Tip #1: Don't thread-hijack someone else's help thread. Your request gets lost very easily that way.
Tip #2: If you're going to seek help from an online forum, first google your question, second perform a search of that forum's contents, and third (if necessary) create a new thread where you verbosely describe your problem in as much detail as you can muster.
Tip #3: On the taskbar, up at the top of your screen, is a little network symbol. It probably looks like two computer screens with a red X. L-click it. Select your router's name. Click it. Enter your router's password. You're connected.
If Tip #3 doesn't work, it is PROBABLY because you installed Karmic UNR and didn't follow the instructions to connect to wired internet and update your wireless drivers. Perform that duty, and then repeat Tip #3.
