As for the keyboard, I seem to recall there was a discussion of removing and swapping the key caps, but not the underlying mechanisms, in the thread about replacing the US keyboard with the International one.
But it sounds like you simply have some soft drink residue left behind from your original spill, and probably the easiest thing to try would be to remove the k/b again and let it soak for a couple of days in distilled (and preferably deionized) water, agitating it every few hours to help move things around, then stand it on end to let it drain and dry thoroughly again before reinstalling it in your mini.
