Okay, I tried to reinstall osx, and no luck. When I try and partition, erase, etc. in Disk Utility, the computer freezes. So, I assumed that the problem is the harddrive, but I was able to install Ubuntu without a hitch.
Since the disk was now reformatted with Ubuntu, I tried to install osx again, and I ran into the same problem (much like discussed in this thread: http://www.mydellmini.com/forum/disk-ut ... 927s0.html).
I am wondering if the problem is with the software or is it the harddrive?

This seems to be one of the more common failure modes for that model of drive. It seems to be highly unreliable with GUID partitions. You could install something like the really old Kalyway distro that supported using MBR.
