Default PXE OS not found error - next steps? - 08-23-2009, 11:09 PM

I recently got this error my my Dell Mini 9/XP home

Pxe-e61 media test failure, check cable
pxe-m0f exiting pxe rom
operating system not found

Setup shows 7399MB on my (8gB) drive.

There are some files I'd like to obtain from the drive (mostly chrome bookmarks), although I realize it might not be possible. What steps would I take to do this? I'm kinda clueless when it comes to this stuff, so while I've tried to follow the existing forum info about recovering from this error, I'm not at all sure that I've done it right. This is what I've tried so far:
1. Reseating the drive - didn't make any difference
2. Creating a USB bootable drive with UNetbootin. I can successfully boot to the Xubuntu desktop, but don't know what to do next. I can't see anything that resembles the C:\ that I would expect to be able to navigate to. (Given that my mini runs on XP, I don't even know if it made sense to do that?)

What other things should I try before I give up and send it back?

PXE errors indicate that the BIOS did not find anything bootable on the SSD and it tried an Ethernet boot (which, of course, failed.)

You could try booting the XP CD and seeing if the "Repair" option works.
