I am able to make the gpu reset at will using the settings that nitzmahone mentions. I do not even close the lid, I just let it go to sleep, wait a couple minutes, and move the mouse. In the eventvwr, I get an Event ID 4101, "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered".

Technet describes the issue here:

Event ID 4101 ? Display Driver Timeout Detection and Recovery

But their fix is to get an updated video driver from MS Update. The WDHC forum has some reg hacks to try Timeout Detection and Recovery of GPUs through WDDM .

I may reload 7600 on my spare 8 gig STEC but only use the original drivers from the Forum FAQ and not the latest ones from Update and see what that does.
