Maxing out the memory (RAM) on your Dell Mini is easy, cheap, and effective. Do it today!

Frequently Asked Questions
I thought the max was 1 gb? Why doesn't Dell offer it with more? - In order to ship the Mini with Windows XP instead of Windows Vista, there are...

[quote="jefito I'd sure like to see some technical documentation that explains that phenomenon. ~jeff[/quote]

I'll bet the software architects at Microsoft would like to see the fix or at least a good explaination as well.

nothing... if say you already have 1 gig and have plenty of headroom... then absolutely nothing... but i installed 2 gigs any way :ugeek:
can I really expect NO gains by doubleing the RAM? That doesent seem right. are you sure?

What doesn't seem right about it? What kind of gains would *you* expect?

I would expect to be able to run a few more programs at once

i would expect Outlook to run faster

I would expect a degree of the ocational slugishness to go away.

I would expext the same type of results from doubleing the RAM on any unit, mini or not.

Are my expectations unrealistic?

No. Doubling the ram would most certainly help with all of that.

I'm not sure what thay guy is talking about.

Sure, you should be able to do that. The question is what programs, and whether the CPU can handle that load or not. The Atom is not a superfast CPU.

I don't know why you'd expect that, unless maybe in the case of Outlook, it can cache more stuff or something, depending on how much RAM there is available. Do you know the cause of Outlook's sluggishness?

I don't know why you'd expect that, unless more RAM available prevents paging from taking place. If that's the case, you should consider turning off paging, too, just to make sure.

That seems circular to me. Does that mean that doubling RAM always makes a system faster? I doubt that that's the case. Depends on what you're measuring -- for example, hibernation automatically becomes slower because you need double the disk space to hold the image of all that RAM, and double the time to read/write it.

Expectations are always tricky. Adding more RAM won't automagically make your system any faster; it *might* make your system be able to operate more quickly by being able to hold more stuff in RAM, but there's no guarantees there. And of course it all depends on what kind of workload you're throwing at it. I can bring my quad-core 3Gb desktop to its knees with Visual Studio, but my 1Gb Mini seems to have hit a sweet spot, performance-wise, for the work that I do on it, and I'm happy with it.
