You are being paranoid. Many third party apps are available only via download or through their own repo's. The problem you will face is getting things that are compiled for the lpia architecture.
If you are looking to really take advantage of Linux on your Mini 9 I would suggest dropping the Dellbuntu 8.04 and installing the vanilla 9.04 i386 from Canonical at Ubuntu Home Page | Ubuntu. If you decide to go this route you will have an option to import your settings from an existing profile during the installation process which will keep your current background, preferences, etc by duplicating and re-using your /home folder from your current installation.
