I can't quantify it, but my Mini feels 'snappy' after I decompressed the drive.

Before I de-compressed the drive I was considering returning as too slow - well, to be fair, not sufficiently faster than my Nokia N800 to make it worth keeping as a mobile browser (for Firefox 3).

I have so little stuff on my Mini 9's SSD that I decompress AND let Windows control it's own swap file.
At that I'm barely using 8gb of my 16gb drive, so it makes little difference to me how much room is taken up as long as the machine can "stretch it's legs" and work it's best.

I am a Nokia N800 owner, too...and comparing the n800 (320MHz CPU and 128MB RAM) to the Mini is like comparing the Palm V to the newest Blackberry. If your N800 is faster than your drive-compressed Mini -- even just for browsing, I'm concerned that there may be something seriously wrong with your Mini.

All I'm saying is that we should be using actual data to make this decision and not just saying it "feels" faster. Because as much as we hate to admit it, we all have a tendency to perceive performance increases and decreases that may or may not exist. Evaluating drive compression should be no different than evaluating CPU performance and RAM performance. But then again, some people swear their computer gets faster as soon as they put another GB of RAM in...which MAY be true for certain tasks and software, but is unlikely to be true for most users.

I guess I'm just scientifically curious. But in the end -- if it FEELS slower or faster, then I suppose that is what matters most.

I switched off compression and indexing on mine because of the recommendations on this site. I don't really feel any difference but since mine is a 16gb, I also don't feel the need to compress it again.

What is the before and after free space?

I just got my Mini. I have like 4 gigs used and 10 gigs free

The post by Twitch about having 10 gigs free and 4 gigs used parallels my experience with my new Mini.
It is supposed to be a 16GB SSD but it shows similar stats, meaning a total sapce of only 14GB. Now I know that delivered space is always less than declared capacity but "losing" 2 gigs on 16GB seems like a lot. Have others seen similar results on their Mini?

I used PCmark05 to test compressed vs uncompressed HDDs performace for general PC type activities. Check out my results, and then check back later to see if 2GB ram helps.

16GB = 16,000,000,000 bytes of disk space, if 1KB = 1,000 bytes like disk manufacturers use
16,000,000,000 / 1024*1024*1024 = 14.90 GB of disk space, if 1KB = 1024 bytes like OS's use

So even before the restore partition, or roundoff errors or whatever you're starting with the fact that the drive is only going to show up as 14.90GB of space...

I'm sure this fit into this conversation somewhere.... but where?
